Top Twenty in Fifty:
#12 - Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

Whatever
There's a First Time for Everything

They always ended up at one of two spots: the McDonald's parking lot or "Burnouts" Park. Micah weaved unsteadily between the hand-me-down Jettas and sweet-sixteen Cherokees all equally decked out with dents and cigarette burns. He'd lost his friends earlier, but he was sure they were all his friends tonight.

I love this cd.

My brother just burned that CD for my daughters. It is really good.

That album name totally annoys me. I must be getting old.

The blokes in the band are about 19 years old. I'd say an adult should have moved past this album's sentiments. But, oh man, when I was 16? I'd have gotten this album's initials tattooed on my arm, James Frey-FTBSITTTD-style.

You know, I don't get the Artic Monkeys. I was looking over at metacritic and saw this had more #1 rankings on the end of year lists than any other CD. I love "I'll Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor," but the rest of the CD doesn't grab me. The surprising thing is this should be right in my wheelhouse. Maybe I am getting too old.

Not to be glib, but I think it could be because it's too loud. Not just because you are old (which, holy god, how do you get around without a walker?), but to go to back to the compression talk from last week, this album can wear thin from trying to maintain a really hot, high, loud sound.

I think the tunes aren't catchy enough for me. I like the attitude and energy, just not the songwriting. And I thought The Streets did a better job with the night-out concept album.
